Under Water

Thanks to everyone who has contacted us concerned. Yes, the flooding is very near us, just down the road actually, but so far our apartment is out of danger. The nearest apartment complex to us is a little closer to the river, and they were just evacuated yesterday. This photo is their parking lot...

Our apartment has a bit more elevation, so we don't think they'll make us leave, even though water levels could potentially rise yet another 10 feet between now and Monday night. Yesterday we went for a stroll to evaluate the damage, and were quite shocked by what we found. It's one thing to hear about it, and whole different thing to actually see it. Yes that is a boat parked next to the road sign.

The rest are photos of a major intersection that until Thursday we used on a daily basis. The water line on the nearby buildings is about to the top of their front doors.

Here's a short video of the same landscape.

Being in the bishopric of our ward has certainly made me appreciate both the blessing and the responsibility that comes with being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tomorrow for example, our ward is meeting in two different places so that members don't have to try and cross the river at the few remaining, unpredictable bridges. We'll only hold sacrament meeting, assess needs, then head out to the community to sand-bag. Opportunities to serve abound. It will take quite some time for our city to recover from this. We'll keep you posted.

So, so glad you are well and your stuff is relatively safe. Your pics are amazing. Sending an ark soon...or maybe Abby should send a dove from the second floor window in search of dry land. Love you guys!

It's been so long since we've checked in on you two, we didn't even realize you're in the middle of all that! Glad to hear you're ok, and Abby, I think you are gorgeous with long hair! Love it!

Dave,

If you liked Hitchhiker's Guide, you may like the sequels. The next is Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Or another Douglas Adams book would be Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Other suggestions for something different, yet still sci-fi-ish: Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut - darkly humorous, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - good story (they are making it into a movie this year), or The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin - I don't know what to say about it, I just thought it was good.
