One evening we were visiting with some friends. "Where are your kids?" I asked. "Oh, they're in the bedroom asleep." Both couples jumped into the conversation by saying their "social life-saver" has been a Pack 'N Play so their kids can sleep at someone else's home while they visit; otherwise their social life would be restricted to end at 7pm.
I'd never really considered a pack-n-play: we have a crib, a moses basket, and both grandparents have cribs, so what's the point? But maybe there is one. I started looking online and found you can get some pretty decked out pens for up to and over $150, but Target sells one for $47. It is just the pen, no bassinet, changing table, music, or mobile; just the pen. Also, couldn't I use it as a play pen later as well? Around the time she's starting to crawl, isn't content to just sit in her bouncer and watch mommy cook, but I can't be watching her every move to make sure she isn't eating electrical cords.
Dave gets the feeling this is an item we would use once and then just have to haul it around when we move. We compare and contrast baby items a lot. He's right in that you can talk yourself into just about any baby item because they all have some practical or at least convenient use. Is the Pack 'N Play of those? What do you guys use?

Abby,
I have a pack n play that is like the $47 one from Target. I have used it a tone and not just for Caleb.
It is nice to have as a play pen when needed, I have used it for other babies when they came over, I use it when we go out of town, and the one we are always gald to have it for is when we are in a hotel. Hotels cahrge now to use a crib or pack n play and they are just gross anyways.
Every family is different and you have to do the things that will work for you, Dave, and the baby. If you do get one and you end up not using you can always sell it for the price you got it since it would be new. Good Luck!
we dont own a pack n play but are constantly borrowing one! Its great to have if you are going to friends and need a place for the baby to sleep it great to have when company comes who might need a place for their children and its great to have when traveling and staying at hotels. They fold up nice and small and are great for traveling. You can also use them for many years. Isaac still fits into a pack n play and he is 3.z
We love our pack n play! We bought one when dallas was first born and used it in our room. There was the bassinet/changing table which was helpful as well. We used the pack n play till we bought him a crib.
We've taken it everywhere with us and I think it is a great item to have!!!
Wish I had bought the nice one with all the trimmings instead of our bassinet. Most of my friends have them and I borrowed it for Lydia.
I think a pack n play is a must. Think about those toddler days when you're in the shower...you can pull it right up to the bathroom door and so she knows where you are but she can still play safely confined...
I have used it with every kid I have ever watched and will be using it with my little guy as well. if you can, splurge a little to get the basinette part. you can find one for around $60-$70 at albeebaby.com that has the trims and such. good luck!
A pack-n-play is a necessity. We used it all the time with Kate so that we could hang out at our friends house and put her to sleep. We use it camping, when we travel, and even for time-outs. Again, I got a simple one for $4 at a garage sale. Definitely worth it!
Get one! It doesn't need to be the brand pack n play, but anything portable. You will use it because everyone you visit won't have something for baby to sleep in. I wouldn't buy a new one though. Get it used. I bet you can find one in almost new shape in Craigslist for so cheap. we have used ours not only for our kids but for other families kids when they come to sleep here. So worth it.
Hello Thuets! We are so excited for you guys. Soon you will be parents! We have a pack and play and it's nothing fancy. It is just the basic thing and it works great. We have loved it because it's so easy to bring with you if you ever go on vacation, and it is really handy if you babysit another child that needs to nap. We have used ours a ton. It's not big, and it's easy to store and fold up. We think it's worth it.
